Sir,
Hongkong, 3rd. November, 1908.
Representations have recently been made to this Chamber on the subject of the establishment of a direct Parcel Post exchange with the United States of America, and I am directed to inform you that the Committee of this Chamber have noted with pleasure the recent institution of such a service via London, but in view of the length of time necessarily taken through the circuitous route employed, its usefulness from a con- mercial stand point is much depreciated, and they trust that His Excellency the Governor will authorise negotiations to be opened with the United States Postal Authorities, through the Postmaster- Jenaral in London, pointing out the advisableness of a direct service between Hongkong and San Francisco, or other Pacific Port, being inaugurated with as little delay as possible.
The time taken in exchanging parcels would be reduced to less than half that now possible under the present conditions, and the additional revenue accruing from the Service would doubtlessly be specially welcome at the present time to the Government of this Colony.
Hoa, Colonial Secretary.
I have etc., (Sd.) A. R. Lowe,
Secretary.
